Question: Can 10x Genomics pipelines run on non Linux operating systems?
Answer: All of our primary analysis pipelines run on Linux only. These pipelines include Cell Ranger, Long Ranger, and Supernova. Before installing these tools we recommend reviewing the system requirements for each software product page on the support site.
Our Loupe family of visualization tools for viewing pipeline outputs run on Windows and Mac OSX. In addition, Loupe Genome Browser can run on Linux as well.
When customers run 10x analysis pipelines on MacOS, they will probably get this error: "readlink: illegal option -- f"
This is due to the fact that certain commands are implemented differently on Linux vs. their MacOS counterpart (Linux vs. MacOS readlink)
Even though some Linux binaries can run on Windows by installing WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux), it is not a complete replacement for a dedicated Linux machine (Can I run ALL Linux apps in WSL?).
If the customer tries to run a pipeline using WSL, they will probably get this error: "/proc/sys/fs/file-max does not exist."
