Question: Can gene expression in microbial samples be profiled?
Answer: The Single Cell Gene Expression solution is designed to partition and barcode polyadenylated mRNA molecules from eukaryotic cells. While there is no known lower limit on the size of the cells that can be partitioned, the 10x Single Cell 3' assay is unlikely to lyse microbes efficiently. Additionally, most microbe transcripts will not have a 3' polyadenylated tail and will not be captured by our assay. To overcome these challenges, it may be possible to develop a custom method to capture microbial gene expression information.
